How to update BuildKit on macOS when using Docker desktop?

I checked docker buildx ls and I see that my buildkit is a few versions behind what's in the changelog. How do I upgrade it?

You can:

• Upgrade Docker Desktop, which would also upgrade the version of BuildKit that comes bundled with Docker Desktop
• Create a custom builder which runs BuildKit in a container. In this case, you can specify which version of BuildKit you would like to run.

For example, to create a docker-container builder which:

• Is used by default when you run docker buildx build
• Runs BuildKit v0.17.0
• Loads images to your Docker Engine image store by default (like the default builder does)

  docker buildx create \
    --name container \
    --driver-opt image=moby/buildkit:v0.17.0 \
    --driver-opt default-load=true \
    --use --bootstrap

Note

You do need to use the docker buildx build command to select this builder. The docker build shorthand always selects the default builder, even if you created a custom builder with --use. You can manually override the builder for the docker build shorthand with --builder=container, but it needs to be done explicitly.
