A collection of scripts that modify the Tiny Core Linux ISO to include a playable version of classic DOOM.
I was inspired be this repository, which builds a minimal version of Linux just to play DOOM.
I thought that was pretty cool and wondered what other minimal Linux distro could be used for this purpose… and then I thought of Tiny Core Linux Core edition.
At just 17 MB, it seemed to be the ideal candidate for such a silly experiment 😅 (although the final ISO is closer to 25 MB in most cases).
So here, instead of building a minimal Linux distro from scratch, we just modify the ISO directly.
For the provided scripts to work, you need to download the Core version of Tiny Core Linux and make the script point to it.
More info on how to use the scripts and how they work is provided in the README.md found in each separate directory.
The recommend order that you view and read the directories is this:
This is the most heavily modified version of the ISO, and it is a bit more… DOOMy if you get what I mean 😉
You can find this version in the releases section of the repository.
Or better yet make your own version using the script and accompanying files found in the TinyCoom directory.
I used Virtual Box to test the generated ISOs using a very basic configuration:
- Operating System: Other/Unknown (32bit)
- Base Memory: 98 MB
- Video Memory: 1 MB
These options are the bare minimum to get DOOM to execute in the VM (you need more Base Memory if you choose to use Tiny Core DOOM Internet because it needs to install a lot of extra dependences as well as build the executable - 190 MB minimum)
(you also need more Base Memory if you choose to use Tiny Core DOOM Script Injection because it needs to be able to hold the files in memory as it reconstructs them - 122 MB minimum)
The ISOs generated should be able to be used with any utility designed to burn ISO files on USB Flash Drives (Rufus, Unetbootin etc.).
I personally used BalenaEtcher, so I can verify that it works, but you should be able to even use dd
to get the job done.
