arrow keys when editing short message cancel the message

When typing a short message and hitting arrow keys or home/end keys with the intention to edit a portion of the text, another action is takes precedence and the message is lost. I would expect some basic line editing features.

I implemented a solution to this (see above commit), albeit a bit hacky and not optimal.
